Child and Adolescent Assessment

Neuropsychological assessment often shares many similarities with psychoeducational assessment and the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably. Neuropsychological assessment is more specifically utilized in the context of evaluating children, adolescents and adults whose functioning may have been affected by congenital and genetic atypicalities, accidents (i.e. concussions), and medical problems. Regardless of the reason for referral, neuropsychological assessment is utilized to determine current levels of functioning, to identify areas of need, and to develop a treatment plan. Subsequent neuropsychological assessments can then be used to measure response to treatment.

A psychoeducational assessment helps determine a student’s strengths and weaknesses and identify issues that negatively impact his or her ability to learn. The assessment involves an evaluation of the student’s cognitive abilities, academic skills, processing speed, and emotional and behavioral functioning with the goal of determining whether one or more of these areas present barriers to the student’s academic success.

At C4L, our licensed Speech/Language Pathologists provide a comprehensive assessment of your student’s communication skills. The assessment examines articulation, receptive language, expressive language, pragmatic (social) language, literacy and phonological skills, and fluency of speech (stuttering). Our team will also consult with you about your student’s language acquisition and developmental milestones. Following our evaluation, our team will discuss our clinical impressions, recommendations, goals, and prognosis, as well as provide a comprehensive written report.

At C4L, we have extensive experience assessing children and adolescents who may be on the Autism Spectrum. Utilizing gold standard assessment tools, we use the data generated by neurodevelopmental testing to make nuanced diagnoses and create comprehensive treatment plans that include educational recommendations and ancillary treatments such as occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, social skills training, and applied behavioral analysis.

Center for Learning and Behavioral Solutions (C4L) offers Independent Education Evaluations (IEEs) for students and their families. An IEE is intended to be an independent evaluation conducted by clinicians who have no affiliation with the public school system. The purpose of the evaluation is to determine special education eligibility and to make recommendations for program placement and for the services that the student should be entitled to receive. C4L is a non-public agency (NPA) registered with the Orange County Department of Education and is able to provide the following services as part of the process:

• Review of student records
• Parent interview and consultation
• Observation of student at school and home (as needed)
• Complete Psycho-Educational Assessment
• Written report
• Individual Education Plan (IEP) attendance

C4L recognizes the importance of early preparation for your child to have a successful emotional and academic experience in school. Readiness for Kindergarten implies that your child is developmentally ready for the transition, including readiness academically, socially, and physically ready.

At C4L, we assess your student to assist you, the parent, in determining your student’s physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development. We also provide your preschooler with early literacy skills, including vocabulary development, early phonemic awareness instruction, and alphabet mastery. In addition, to prepare your student for kindergarten, we incorporate language development, fine motor activities, number recognition, and multi-sensory experiences within our educational readiness plan.

Academic and career guidance aims to help high school or college students make more informed and better educational and career choices. Career Assessments help clarify the unique interests, personality and skills that are most important to consider when evaluating career options. Assessment in this area also helps teenagers and young adults to understand the type of academic and occupational training needed to succeed in the workplace, as well as the types of post-secondary opportunities that are associated with their field of interest. We provide teachers, administrators, and parents with information they can use to support students’ career exploration and post-secondary educational opportunities.
