Instead of Giving the Answer: Teaching Kids How to Think Through Problems

Series Introduction: As children move through the school year, they encounter challenges that require more than knowing the right answer. They need to know how to approach a difficult task, make a decision, recover from a mistake, and figure out what to do when their first plan doesn’t work.

As parents, it can be tempting to jump in and solve problems for our children—especially when they’re frustrated or when we know exactly what to do. But every time we allow children the opportunity to think, try, adjust, and try again, we’re helping them build skills they’ll carry with them for years to come.

This month, Raising Problem Solvers: Building Independent Thinkers for Life will explore practical ways to help children become more independent thinkers and confident problem-solvers. We’ll look at how to support children through productive struggle, encourage decision-making, help them learn from mistakes, and develop the resourcefulness they need to navigate challenges both in and outside of school.

The goal isn’t to raise children who never need help. It’s to raise children who know they are capable of finding a way forward—and who feel confident asking for support when they truly need it.

Introduction: When your child comes to you with a problem, what’s your first instinct?

Maybe you immediately know how to help. You might want to explain the answer, fix the mistake, or show your child exactly what to do. Sometimes, this is necessary. Children absolutely need support, guidance, and instruction from the adults who care for them.

But there are also moments when the most helpful thing we can do is pause.

Children don’t become strong problem-solvers by watching adults solve every problem for them. They develop these skills by having opportunities to think, make predictions, try different approaches, make mistakes, and try again.

Learning to solve problems independently doesn’t mean children should be left alone when something feels difficult. Instead, it means parents can shift from being the person who solves the problem to being the person who guides the problem-solving process.

The next time your child says, “I don’t know what to do,” consider resisting the urge to immediately provide the answer. Instead, ask a question that helps them take the next step.

Because sometimes, the most powerful answer isn’t an answer at all—it’s helping your child discover that they are capable of finding one.

WHY WE SHOULDN’T ALWAYS RUSH TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM As parents, our instinct is often to help. When our child is frustrated with homework, struggling to build something, or unsure what to do next, it’s natural to want to jump in and make things easier. We might say, “Here, let me show you,” or quickly give them the answer so they don’t have to struggle. But while helping can solve the immediate problem, it doesn’t always teach children how to solve the next one. Problem-solving is a skill that develops through practice. Children need opportunities to think, make predictions, try different approaches, make mistakes, and try again. When parents resist the urge to immediately provide the solution, they create space for children to develop confidence in their own thinking. The goal isn’t to leave your child struggling alone. It’s to shift from being the problem-solver to being the coach.
	ASK QUESTIONS THAT GET THEIR BRAIN WORKING One of the simplest ways to build problem-solving skills is to replace answers with questions. Instead of saying, “That’s not going to work,” try asking: “What do you think will happen if you try that?” “What have you tried so far?” “What could you try differently?” “Is there another way to approach this?” “What do you think your first step should be?” “What resources could help you figure this out?” These questions encourage children to slow down and think through the problem instead of immediately looking to an adult for the answer. The goal isn’t to quiz your child or make every interaction a learning opportunity. Instead, look for natural moments when your child is stuck and needs a little support getting started.
GIVE HINTS INSTEAD OF SOLUTIONS Sometimes children genuinely need help. That’s okay. Supporting independence doesn’t mean refusing to help—it means offering the right amount of help. Try using a “least help first” approach. Start with a small hint and see if your child can take the next step independently. For example: Child: “I don’t know how to do this math problem.” Instead of: “Here’s how you do it.” Try: “What part of the problem do you understand?” If they’re still stuck, provide another small clue: “Can you look at the example above? What do you notice?” This approach gives children the opportunity to experience the satisfaction of figuring something out themselves while knowing that support is available when they truly need it.

PARENT CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES

Challenge 1:  Feeling Like It’s Faster to Just Give the Answer When you’re rushing to get out the door or trying to finish homework before bedtime, waiting for your child to work through a problem can feel frustrating. Giving the answer often seems like the quickest solution. Strategy:  Look for small opportunities to practice instead of trying to change everything at once. Choose one or two everyday moments when you intentionally pause before helping. Give your child an extra 30 seconds to think, then offer a question or hint instead of the solution. Remind yourself that the goal isn’t simply to finish the task—it’s to help your child develop a skill they can use independently in the future.

Challenge 2: Worrying That Your Child Will Become Too Frustrated Watching your child struggle can be uncomfortable, especially when you know exactly how to fix the problem. You may worry that allowing them to struggle will make them feel discouraged or cause them to give up. Try saying: “I can see this is getting frustrating. Let’s take a breath. What part feels hardest right now?” You can also offer two choices: “Would you like a small hint, or would you like to take a short break and try again?” This teaches your child that needing support doesn’t mean they have failed. Strategy:  Parent sitting beside a frustrated child, offering a reassuring hand or calm encouragement while the child remains engaged with the activity.

Challenge 3: Your Child Immediately Says, “I Don’t Know” Some children quickly respond with “I don’t know” whenever they encounter something challenging. Over time, they may begin to rely on adults to think for them rather than trusting their own ability to figure things out. Strategy:  Instead of accepting “I don’t know” at the end of the conversation, gently help your child move one step further. Try asking: “What’s one thing you do know?” “What have you already tried?” “If you had to guess, what would you say?” “What could you try first?” Celebrate the thinking process, even when the answer isn’t correct. Say things like, “I like how you thought about that,” or “That was a good strategy to try.” Over time, your child learns that “I don’t know yet” is different from “I can’t.”

Raising a problem solver doesn’t mean stepping back and leaving your child to figure everything out alone. It means learning when to step in, when to step back, and when to simply ask the question that helps your child find their own way forward.

The next time your child comes to you with a problem, pause before giving the answer. Ask a question. Offer a hint. Give them time to think.

You might be surprised by what they can figure out when they realize they don’t have to know the answer immediately—they just have to be willing to think, try, adjust, and try again.

Because the greatest gift we can give children isn’t the ability to solve every problem for them. It’s the confidence to believe:

“I can figure this out.”

School Success Starts at Home – How to Support Learning Without Hovering

As the school year gets underway, many parents find themselves wondering how much support is too much. We want our children to succeed, stay organized, and feel confident—but it can be difficult to know when to step in and when to step back. While our instincts may tell us to solve problems, remind them of every task, or double-check every assignment, some of the most valuable learning happens when children are given opportunities to take ownership of their responsibilities.

Creating a supportive home environment doesn’t mean hovering over every detail. Instead, it means providing structure, encouragement, and guidance while allowing your child to develop independence, problem-solving skills, and confidence. In this week’s blog, we’ll explore practical ways to support learning at home, establish healthy routines, and help your child become a more capable and self-directed learner—without adding pressure or stress to your relationship.

WHY HOME SUPPORT MATTERS (AND WHERE IT CAN GO TOO FAR) Kids thrive when they feel supported—but not smothered. As school starts, it’s natural to want to help with every detail. But stepping back in the right ways builds independence, confidence, and responsibility.
	SET THE STAGE FOR FOCUS AND OWNERSHIP Designate a consistent workspace. Offer tools, not answers. Let your child know when you’re available to check in, and praise effort over outcomes. Model curiosity: “What’s your plan for getting this done?”
USE ROUTINES, NOT REMINDERS Constant prompting can feel like nagging (to you and your child). Instead, use visual cues like whiteboards, planners, or timers to put the responsibility in their hands. Establish routines for when and where work gets done.
	STAY CONNECTED—WITHOUT TAKING OVER Ask open-ended questions instead of demanding updates: “What’s one thing you learned today?” “What felt tricky?” Offer a consistent check-in time so your child can predict when support is coming, not dodge it.

PARENT CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES

Challenge 1:  Feeling pressure to ensure everything gets done “right” You might worry that missed assignments or messy work reflect poorly on your parenting. Strategy:  Let your child make (and learn from) small mistakes. Teachers expect some wobbles—it’s part of learning.

	Challenge 2: Struggling to know when to step in It can be hard to tell if your child truly needs help or is avoiding a challenge. Strategy:  Ask, “What part feels hard?” Then offer a choice: “Do you want help getting started or figuring it out first?”
Challenge 3: Balancing expectations across siblings or ages Supporting one child while managing others can feel chaotic. Strategy:  Use staggered check-ins. Empower older kids to use timers or lists while you guide younger ones.

Home is where habits are built—and where confidence takes root. When we step back strategically and offer support with intention, we teach kids they’re capable. And that belief lasts far beyond the homework table.

	Challenge 2: Wanting to advocate without sounding difficult You want your child’s needs met but fear being labeled as a “difficult parent.” Strategy:  Approach as a partner. Use language like, “We’ve seen success with ___ at home and hope it can help here.”
Challenge 3: Feeling disconnected from school culture New environments can feel intimidating, especially if your child has learning or behavior differences. Strategy:  Start small: attend orientation, say hi at drop-off, and follow up with a positive note. These small efforts build trust.
