Let’s Reflect: Reviewing What Worked (and What Didn’t) This Year

When the school year comes to a close, it’s easy to shift focus straight to summer, but there’s real value in taking a moment to look back. Reflection gives kids the chance to see how far they’ve come, not just academically, but emotionally and socially too. It helps them make sense of challenges, recognize their progress, and build a stronger understanding of how they learn and grow. By creating space for reflection, we turn everyday experiences into meaningful insights, and set the stage for even greater confidence moving forward.

WHY REFLECTION MATTERS The end of the school year is a natural time to pause and reflect. Looking back helps your child recognize growth, process struggles, and build self-awareness, an important foundation for stronger executive function.
CELEBRATE WINS—BIG AND SMALL Ask your child: What’s something you’re proud of? What got easier this year? Help them see progress, whether it’s academic, emotional, or social. Small wins matter.
NORMALIZE WHAT DIDN’T WORK Reflection isn’t about perfection – it’s about noticing patterns. Talk about what felt hard: “What made mornings tricky?” or “What felt overwhelming during homework?” Then gently explore what might help next time.

PARENT CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES

Challenge 1:  Wanting to skip reflection and just move on After a long year, it’s tempting to focus only on the break ahead. Strategy:  Carve out one short “look back” conversation; on a walk, over ice cream, or while crafting. Keep it low-pressure and positive.

Challenge 2: Feeling discouraged about the year’s challenges If the year felt like a struggle, reflecting might bring up guilt or frustration. Strategy:   Start with strengths. Name what got better. Then invite your child to co-create goals or strategies for the next season.
Challenge 3: Not knowing how to make it meaningful Reflection can feel vague without structure. Strategy:  Use sentence starters: “One thing I’m proud of…,” “Something I want to get better at…,” “This helped me…”

Final Thoughts: Reflection turns experience into growth. By guiding your child to look back with curiosity – not criticism – you help them take ownership of their journey. That mindset sets the stage for stronger, more confident steps forward.

Flexible Thinking in Real Life: Vacations, Plans Changing, etc.

Life rarely goes exactly as planned, and for kids, those unexpected changes can feel big, frustrating, and hard to handle. That’s why flexibility isn’t just a “nice-to-have” skill; it’s a true superpower. The ability to adjust, pivot, and recover when things don’t go as expected helps children navigate everyday challenges with more confidence and less stress. While it doesn’t always come naturally, especially for kids who thrive on predictability—flexibility can be taught, practiced, and strengthened over time. With the right support, kids can learn not just to handle change, but to grow from it.

WHY FLEXIBILITY IS A SUPERPOWER Flexibility is one of the hardest executive function skills to teach, but one of the most important. Whether it’s a canceled outing, a change in routine, or someone else getting a turn first, life constantly asks kids to adapt. Practicing flexibility helps them cope with change instead of spiraling.
REAL-LIFE OPPORTUNITIES TO PRACTICE Summer plans often shift. Use these moments to model and coach through flexibility: “Our hike is rained out—what else could we do?” Make a “Plan B” jar with fun backup ideas your child helped create.
TEACHING REFRAMES AND RECOVERY SKILLS When things don’t go as expected, help your child name the feeling (“I’m disappointed”), then reframe: “Even though we can’t do ___, we still get to ___.” Practice bouncing back with movement, humor, or a change in environment.

PARENT CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES

Challenge 1:  Struggling with your own flexibility If you also feel frustrated when plans change, it’s hard to model calm adaptability. Strategy:  Narrate your own reframes: “I was looking forward to that too, but let’s make the best of it.”

Challenge 2: Kids melting down when things shift Transitions and surprises are hard for many neurodivergent kids. They may shut down or lash out when plans change. Strategy:  Use visuals to preview changes. Offer choices within the new plan to restore a sense of control.
Challenge 3: Believing flexibility should be automatic It’s easy to assume kids should “just deal with it,” but flexible thinking is a learned skill. Strategy:  Practice during low-stakes situations. Celebrate flexible moments with praise: “You handled that change so well!”

When we treat flexibility like a skill—not a personality trait—we create room for growth. Summer offers plenty of practice for handling change, recovering from disappointment, and finding joy in the unexpected.

Next week, we’ll reflect on the whole year: what worked, what didn’t, and how to move forward stronger.

Planning Projects: Helping Kids Manage Big Tasks

Big ideas come naturally to many kids, but turning those ideas into finished projects is where things often fall apart. For children with ADHD, anxiety, or executive function challenges, even exciting tasks can quickly become overwhelming without a clear path forward. That’s why learning how to plan and break down projects is such an essential skill. When kids are given the tools to take something big and make it manageable, they don’t just get more done, they build confidence, persistence, and a sense of ownership over their ideas.

WHY PROJECT PLANNING MATTERS Big tasks can feel overwhelming for kids, especially those with ADHD, anxiety, or executive function challenges. Teaching them how to break a big idea into smaller, manageable steps builds confidence and follow-through.
HOW TO BREAK IT DOWN Start with the end goal: “What do you want to build, create, or do?” Then work backward. Use questions like, “What do we need first?” and “What comes next?” Try mapping steps visually or assigning one task per day.
USING TIME AND TOOLS WISELY Timers, calendars, and visual checklists help kids see time as something they can manage. Let them choose how to track progress and celebrate small wins along the way.

PARENT CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES

Challenge 1:  Wanting to take over the process  It’s tempting to step in and take control when your child seems stuck. Strategy:  Ask guiding questions instead of giving answers. Let the child lead, even if it’s not perfect.

Challenge 2: Kids giving up halfway through Some kids lose steam once the novelty wears off or the task gets hard. Strategy:  Break tasks into very small chunks with visible progress. Use praise and reflection to build momentum.
Challenge 3: Projects staying stuck in the “idea” stage Children often love dreaming big but struggle to follow through. Strategy:  Help them start with a “mini version” of their idea. Build success in small steps before scaling up.

Project planning is a powerful way to teach responsibility, problem-solving, and patience. When kids learn how to manage big tasks one step at a time, they build real-life skills that carry over into school and beyond.

Next week, we’ll dive into one of the hardest executive function skills to teach: flexible thinking, especially when plans change or things don’t go as expected.

Set Up for Summer Success: Systems That Stick

Series Introduction:

Summer is the perfect time to build executive function skills like planning, organization, flexibility, and follow-through…without the pressure of school. This month, we’ll walk you through simple strategies to help your child prepare for a smoother, more confident year ahead. From daily routines to project management to handling change, consider this your summer bootcamp for life skills.

When summer arrives, the shift from structured school days to open-ended time can feel freeing…but also unsettling, especially for kids who rely on routine to stay regulated and focused. Without the familiar rhythm of the school day, it’s easy for habits to unravel and frustration to build. That’s why a little intentional structure can make such a big difference. Simple, supportive systems don’t take away the magic of summer, they create a sense of stability that helps kids feel more confident, independent, and ready to make the most of their days.

WHY SUMMER STRUCTURE MATTERS When the school year ends, routines often fall apart, and with them, a child’s sense of stability. A little structure goes a long way. Establishing simple systems now helps kids feel more grounded, capable, and ready for success.
WHAT MAKES A SYSTEM WORK? The best systems are visual, simple, and flexible. Think checklists, timers, calendars, or labeled bins. Bonus points if your child helps make them.  They’re more likely to follow through on what they helped design.
HELPING KIDS BUILD OWNERSHIP Let your child choose how they want to track progress. Do they want to use a dry-erase board? An app? A paper chart with stars? Involving them builds buy-in.

PARENT CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES

Challenge 1:  Struggling to follow through consistently Even well-intentioned plans fall apart without follow-through. Life gets busy, and structure slips. Strategy:  Keep it simple. Start with one or two routines and build gradually. Use visuals and reminders.

Challenge 2: Kids resisting structure over the summer Some kids push back against routines when school is out, they want freedom. Strategy:  Present structure as a tool for freedom: “When we get this done, you’ll have more time to play.” Use rewards and fun visuals.
Challenge 3: Trying to do too much at once Overloading with routines or tools can overwhelm kids—and parents. Strategy:  Pick one “anchor habit” like a morning checklist or nightly tidy-up, and grow from there.

Executive function isn’t taught in one big lesson, it’s built through small, consistent actions. Setting up summer systems helps kids feel empowered and prepares them to carry that momentum into the next school year.

Next week, we’ll tackle how to help your child manage big projects, from crafts to chores to planning a summer outing.

Building Identity and Confidence in Neurodiverse Children

In a world that often encourages kids to “fit in,” understanding who you are—and feeling good about it—is a powerful advantage. For neurodiverse children, identity isn’t just a personal concept; it shapes how they learn, connect, and navigate everyday challenges.

When kids see their differences not as deficits but as part of what makes them unique, everything shifts. Confidence grows, self-advocacy strengthens, and resilience takes root.

By nurturing a strong, positive sense of identity, we’re not just helping our children feel seen—we’re helping them thrive as exactly who they are meant to be.

WHY IDENTITY MATTERS For neurodiverse children—those with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, or other learning differences—how they see themselves shapes how they move through the world. When kids feel accepted and valued for who they are, they’re more likely to advocate for themselves, try new things, and bounce back from setbacks.
HELPING YOUR CHILD KNOW WHO THEY ARE Identity is built through both reflection and feedback. Celebrate your child’s unique wiring. Give language to their strengths: “You’re so curious,” “You notice things others miss,” “You think in pictures.” These affirmations help build self-awareness and self-worth.
CONFIDENCE COMES FROM BELONGING Kids need to see others like them thriving. Introduce them to stories, shows, or real people who share their experiences. Connect with communities—whether online or in person—that reflect and affirm your child’s neurodiverse identity.

PARENT CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES

Challenge 1:  Wanting to protect your child from labels Some parents avoid using terms like “autism” or “dyslexia,” fearing stigma or self-limiting beliefs. Strategy:  Reframe labels as language for empowerment. Share diagnosis information in strengths-first ways: “This means your brain works differently—and that’s powerful.”

Challenge 2: Worrying that self-advocacy sounds like excuse-making Encouraging your child to ask for what they need can feel risky, especially in academic or social settings. Strategy:  Teach language that’s respectful and confident: “I learn best when…” or “I need a quiet space to focus.” Practice it at home first.
Challenge 3: Not feeling connected to your child’s identity If your child’s experience is different from your own, you might feel unsure how to relate or guide them. Strategy:  Learn with them. Ask open-ended questions about what helps, what’s hard, and what makes them feel proud. Show curiosity without pressure.

Confidence grows when kids feel safe being themselves. When you help your child name, celebrate, and advocate for who they are, you’re giving them a lifelong foundation of self-trust and resilience.

Series Wrap-Up: Final Thoughts for Families

This month, we looked beyond the struggles to celebrate the superpowers that make our children unique. Whether your child learns differently, thinks creatively, or faces emotional challenges, their strengths are not only real—they’re essential.

By shifting the focus from fixing to understanding, we open the door for growth, confidence, and deeper connection. We explored how to:

• Spot hidden strengths in everyday life
• Support creative thinking without limits
• Reframe struggles as stepping stones
• Help children feel proud of who they are and how they learn

Your child’s brain might be wired differently—but that wiring comes with power, perspective, and potential. Thank you for choosing to lead with strengths and raise a child who feels seen.

Stay tuned next month for a new series on our summer prep series—one step at a time.
